Houston is home to many excellent schools that are sure to suit every educational need your family may have. The area offers superb public schools, private schools, colleges and universities. The Houston community is dedicated to providing a safe and encouraging environment where all students can grow and achieve their goals on a daily basis.

Public Schools

Houston Independent School District

HISD serves more than 202,000 students in more than 300 schools. Schools are organized within five geographic regions (North, East, South, West, and Central) by feeder patterns composed of specific elementary, middle, and high schools; an Alternative and Charter Schools Office oversees those types of schools.

Spring Branch Independent School District

Spring Branch Independent School District is a school district headquartered in Hedwig Village, Texas ( USA). The district serves a portion of Houston not covered by the Houston Independent School District and is located in the western part of the city, also including several small municipalities known as the Memorial Villages in its jurisdiction, such as Hedwig Village and Spring Valley Village. A majority of the district lies within Houston city limits.

Aldine Independent School District

The center of Aldine Independent School District is located approximately 15 miles north of downtown Houston. Aldine ISD covers 111 square miles of north Harris County and encompasses Bush Intercontinental Airport and Greenspoint Mall, the Houston area's largest regional mall. The district includes a variety of communities, from rural, to suburban, to commercial and industrial. Aldine is one of the 12 largest school districts in Texas. During the 2003-04 school year, Aldine ISD was named one of five national finalists for the Broad Prize for Urban Education. The Prize is awarded to a urban school district making the greatest overall improvement in student achievement while reducing achievement gaps across all ethnic and income groups.

Private Schools

Annunciation Orthodox School

Annunciation Orthodox School established itself in 1970 as a co-educational, family-oriented school. Over the years it has grown from a preschool serving a handful of students to a school averaging about 660 students.

The school begins with preschool (age three years) and ends with eighth grade. The AOS curriculum is stimulating, innovative, student-centered and based on the principles of motivation, hard work, and creativity within a nurturing Christian environment. With its close proximity to the museum and performing arts districts, medical center, major universities, libraries, downtown, and zoo, the acquisition of knowledge occurs outside, as well as inside, the classroom. Nationally normed standardized test scores range from the 80s to the 90s, on average, validating the school's academic program and teaching methods. Through this foundation, AOS lays the ground work for high school and beyond.

The Awty International School

The Kinkaid School

The Kinkaid School is a non-sectarian college preparatory day school enrolling a total of 1,280 boys and girls in grades prekindergarten through twelve. Kinkaid's students range in age from four years to eighteen years. The school has three divisions: Lower School (Prekindergarten, Kindergarten, and grades 1-4); Middle School (grades 5-8); and Upper School (grades 9-12). Each division has its own faculty, classrooms, and separate identity, and each has a specific educational plan for nurturing its students. The divisions are unified through educational ideals that characterize Kinkaid and determine its policies. Kinkaid is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest.

St. Thomas High School

In the year 1900, St. Thomas High School was founded by the Basilian Fathers in the downtown area of Houston. In 1940, the campus was moved to its present location at the corner of Memorial Drive and Shepherd, approximately two miles west of the downtown area. The enrollment at St. Thomas is not restricted by specific geographical boundaries; hence, its central location makes it easily accessible to all ethnic and socio-economic groups. This central location also puts St. Thomas High School within two minutes of the cultural centers of Houston, such as the Alley Theater, Jones Hall, The Music Hall, Wortham Theater and the Museums of Fine Arts and Natural Sciences. Upper classmen offer community service to the downtown Soup Kitchen, Casa Juan Diego, Food Bank, Volunteer Center, and Habitat for Humanity.

St. John's Upper

St. John's is an independent, co-educational day school presenting a 13-year sequence of college preparatory training. A non-profit institution, it was founded in 1946 to provide the community with a school of exacting standards in the development of individual, spiritual, ethical, intellectual, social and physical growth. Cypress Christian School
